Secondary Founders

1998-2003

~~ Kristull Dulce (4)

Dulce produced 4 litters for us. Debs Kristull Bebe helped found the Debs Small World Kennel. Kristull Gimlet by Cool Run was sired by the Gringo son, Texas Pinto (Teal'c). She went to New Jersey, where among others, she had Absolute, who came back to live with us before settling with Kohana.


Kristull Cricket
~~ Sired by Nameless and out of Dulce, she was later inbred to her own father, to get Firebug, a Nameless son Beloved to get Yashi and Yasera, to Dulce's brother, Gringo to get Xerox and to the Gringo son Harlequin, for two litters

Kristull Yasera
~~ Sired by the Nameless son, Beloved, Yasera was bred to the Nameless son Umber here at the ranch, producing Natasha, the start of the Colorado kennel, of Firebird. Later, she went to Washington state, producing last year's WD at SilkenFest, Tangaloor Alamogordo, and finally was shared with Conja in Holland, where she produced their striking D litter.

Kristull Xerox
~~ Sired by Gringo, Xerox was bred to the Gringo grandson Fallon, for the Renaissance Kennel, then travelled to produce two lovely litters for Aigrette, finally having a litter for Talisman in California.

Ruby was bred to two different Peacock sons, Decadence to get the secondary founding male, Nameless, and then to Falcone, to get the influential female, Nobunny. When bred to the Falcone son, Feathered Wonder, she produced Omniscense, who founded the Starcastle Kennel in Sweden, and is behind many of the European dogs. Bred to her own grandson, Chili, we got Z-Mystery and Firesong.
Kristull Nobunny
~~ From 5 breedings, she produced an entire dynasty. She was bred to Gringo three times producing Sumbunny, Ivanhoe, Indigo, IMOmega, Susie Q, Snowbunny and Sawyer Brown. Bred to Chili twice, we got Rapunzel, the current oldest Silken, and Coco Chanel, who started Silkens in much of Europe after travelling to Slovenia.

Kristull Suzie Q Tangaloor (6)
~~ Whelped 6 litters. While still here, she was bred to Gringo, as well as the Gringo son, Sawyer Brown. While living with Allegante, she had 3 litters, one sired by two males. She finally settled at Tangaloor, where bred to the Gringo son, she produced some real notables.

Kristull Z Mystery
~~ Her 5 breedings, also produced an entire dynasty. While still at the ranch, she was bred to Nameless, Gringo and the Gringo son, Ivanhoe, with whom she produced Firestar, the start of Elessar Kennel, and Fallon.

Kristull Omniscence
~~ Omni was only bred twice, but still started Silkens in much of Europe.

The Second Founding Event (females)

We saw on the last page, that while there had been a nice variety of founders used in the early years, there was a bottle neck around 2000, when the breed had fallen to critically low levels, and it became necessary to use the dogs still available to "resurrect" the breed. All of the males used, were either Gringo and his sons, or Nameless and his sons.

The females were similarly closely related. This is not hard to understand. For one thing, all of the dogs representing the breed were housed on our ranch in Austin Texas. We kept them for our own personal enjoyment, so realizing that they would never be a recognized breed, there was no reason to keep a large number of them. We kept the dogs that pleased us, intellectually, artistically, functionally

When the Silken Windhounds were "discovered" by the outside world, the question quickly became, "do we have a large enough gene base to establish a healthy breed." The answer, in no uncertain terms, was, "Yes." It might be a different answer, if you ask, "do we have a large enough gene base to maintain a healthy breed into the distant future?"
